New power in play for Central Coast electricity

MONTEREY, Calif. —Monterey Bay Community Power will soon be the new power provider on the Central Coast.

The not for profit is an example of a community choice energy model that are popping up across California. MBCP’s mission is to provide greener energy at a lower cost.

Customers across Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties will start seeing changes to their power bills in July.

Pacific Gas & Electric is not going away it will still deliver electricity, handle customer service, and provide billing. This summer MBCP will show up as the power generator on your bill.

“We purchase power on the wholesale market and then sell it retail just like pg&e did,” said spokeswoman Shelly Whitworth.

The difference is MBCP will be buying greener energy. The organization has committed to purchasing wind, solar, and hydro energy.
