Surplus electricity to boost Chitral’s economy

As people in many parts of the country still face frequent power outages daily, Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa boasts of 25MW of surplus electricity.

The district got electricity in January this year with the completion of 108MW Golen Gol hydropower project consisting of three units of 36MW each. Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had approved in 2016 to directly give the generation of the first unit to Chitral to meet its domestic needs as well as start industrial activity in the area by exploiting the natural resources found locally.

The district now has 25MW of electricity in excess after utilising 11MW for meeting domestic needs. The surplus amount of electricity is being termed by the people a solid basis for the development of Chitral which can be consumed in a number of ways for prosperity and development of the district.
